About us

The Forth Rivers Trust is a small, hardworking team focused on improving the rivers, streams, and catchments that flow into the Firth of Forth. Since we started in 2009, our work has expanded from fish conservation to tackling a wide range of environmental challenges affecting our rivers, wider landscapes, and the wildlife and communities connected to them.

We work with landowners, local authorities, communities, and other partners to tackle issues like poor water quality, invasive species, habitat loss, natural flood management, and more. From removing barriers to fish migration and creating wetlands, to helping land managers find practical solutions for improving soil and water health, we’re here to make real improvements on the ground.

One of our key aims is to restore natural river processes, making our rivers more resilient to climate change. We also want to see more people feeling connected to their local waterways, whether through volunteering, training, or simply knowing what to do when they spot a problem.

At the heart of everything we do is a belief that long-term change comes from working together. That’s why we focus on building strong partnerships and supporting others to take action. There’s a lot to do, but we’re committed to playing our part in creating a healthier Forth landscape for people, wildlife, and future generations.

Forth Rivers Trust Vision Statement

By 2045, the rivers and wildlife of the Forth will be healthy and vibrant. Our rivers will be naturally functioning, unrestricted by barriers, free from pollution, and filled with the widest possible range of native species, benefiting the environment and local communities.

We will strive to promote a future where people and nature can co-exist in the harmony of a green and ethical economy, enhancing overall community wellbeing and ensuring a biodiverse and resilient environment. We will work with communities to ensure they can enjoy and appreciate rivers for both recreational purposes and their wildlife, inspiring action on a local scale for river protection and conservation.

The Forth will become a model for river restoration projects, showcasing habitat creation and management methods, and pioneering how nature-based solutions are used in nature restoration. We will use the best available scientific knowledge, data, advice and expertise to develop an understanding of the importance of healthy rivers and wildlife.

Forth Rivers Trust 2045 Strategy

Our 2045 strategy sets out the long-term change we want to see—but it’s also something we’re learning how to make happen, step by step. It’s helping to guide the work we do now, as we test new ideas, build strong partnerships, and find out what’s really required to achieve these goals and to make a positive difference for rivers, wildlife, and the people who live alongside them. Whether it’s restoring habitats, supporting communities, or tackling pollution and increasing flood resilience we’re building up the knowledge, partnerships, and tools needed to make long-term change possible.

It’s about being honest about what works, learning as we go, and making sure that the work we do today is helping us get closer to where we want to be in 2045.

We welcome you to read our 2045 strategy below.

A 2045 Strategy For The Forth’s Rivers

CORE OBJECTIVES

At the heart of our work is a simple goal: to create healthy rivers that support wildlife, benefit communities, and are managed sustainably for the future. Our core objectives reflect the broad scope of what we do—from hands-on restoration and species protection to community engagement and evidence-based planning. By focusing on rivers, wildlife, people, and science, and working in partnership at every level, we’re shaping a better future for the Forth catchment.

Rivers: Champion rivers at national, regional, and local levels, promoting sustainable catchment management for everyone who relies on them.

Wildlife: Protect and support the species that depend on healthy river habitats to survive and thrive.

Communities: Increase visibility of the ways rivers play a key role in our day to day lives and the ways people can get involved in the life of their local rivers through activities that encourage stewardship, connection and sustainable management.

Science: Champion an evidence-based approach by gathering  and sharing high-quality evidence to guide restoration work, influence policy, and share knowledge about the value of healthy rivers and ecosystems.

The Forth Rivers Trust is committed to being an actual living wage employer and supports the commitments within the Scottish Government Fair Work First guidance by encouraging effective voice, investing in its workforce, opposing the use of zero-hour contracts, taking action to tackle the gender pay gap and create a more diverse and inclusive workplace, offers flexible and family-friendly working practices and opposes the use of fire and rehire.
