Eel Monitoring around the Forth

Eel trapping is a fine art. Oceanic currents, temperature, tide and lunar cycles are just a few things to be taken into account when trying to get your hands on these slippery characters. Up to now we have three toads to show for our efforts, but it’s not all bad when this is your trapping site for the day.

Jack and Scot are visiting some of the coastal burns over the next few weeks to monitor glass eel numbers entering rivers around the Forth.

this handsome chap is what its all about! Fresh from a near 4000 mile journey from the Sargasso Sea! This is our first glass eel this year.

Scotland’s eel run seems to have started much later than the rest of the UK.

If you would like to know more about our work with the eel please contact us or go to our Forgotten Fish Project page.
