It was a busy time yesterday as a temporary dam was built and the water pumped out of an area behind Kirkton weir to create a dry working area where the fish pass will be installed.

The River Forth Fisheries Trust then carried out a fish rescue to save any fish that were trapped in this dried out area. The Trust used electrofishing to stun and net the fish before counting and measuring them and finally releasing them safely upstream.

The species rescued included perch, minnow and stickleback. Just one beautiful wee trout was rescued.

Next year, after the installation of the new fish pass, this part of the river will be open to spawning trout, salmon, eel and lamprey that swim up from further down the catchment.
