Peatland Training Course at Dunruchan
Forth Rivers Trust recently organised a visit to Dunruchan restored peatland site as part of a two-day peatland restoration training event led by the Crichton Carbon Centre. The training funded by Peatland ACTION, included an overview of Scotland’s peatland resource, peatland condition and extent. The aim of the training is to pass on knowledge of the importance of peatlands and upskill contractors to build capacity to restore more peatlands in the future.
The visit to Dunruchan peat bog by kind permission of T, M & R Paterson allowed trainees to view a range of restoration techniques. The bog is within the River Knaik catchment, a sub catchment of the Allan Water. The Dunruchan site has 48ha of restored peatland comprising over 750 peat dams, seven plastic dams and over 10.km of ditch and gully reprofiling. Following the site visit participants were tasked with planning and drawing up a peatland plan.
