The Forth Rivers Trust has an exceptional opportunity for a Consultant Ecologist/Aquatic Scientist to join our team, based in Edinburgh but covering all rivers of the Forth District. The Trust is an environmental charity that works with a range of partners, from the Scottish Government to local environmental groups. In accomplishing our objectives, we work with developers, infrastructure providers and others to ensure that works undertaken do not impact negatively on the health of our rivers and lochs. The Trust already has a strong reputation for providing consultancy services and wishes to build on this and set up a delivery vehicle for discharging this work. Working with aquatic and riparian species within the water environment provides an exciting and specialist part of the environmental services we provide, and the Trust aims to be a regional and national leader in best practice.

The Role
We are seeking a motivated individual with consultancy experience who is looking to progress a career within an ambitious environmental charity. The role would be based at the Trust’s office at Lothianburn just off the Edinburgh Bypass but the works will take the successful applicant throughout the area covered by Forth river catchments.
As a Consultant Ecologist/Aquatic Scientist you will manage a diverse range of ecological surveys and assessments across the Forth District as well as organising and delivering surveys and works on the ground. Your duties may include:
- Developing and maintaining client relationships
- Producing high quality reports
- Preparation of fee quotes and tenders (often under time pressure)
- Mitigation design and implementation and providing advice and information to clients
- Managing resources within an existing team structure, planning projects and fieldwork
- Managing budgets and producing forecasts
- Producing ecological assessments and EIAs
- Completing protected species surveys, protection plans and license applications
- Carrying out aquatic surveys including electrofishing, salmonid habitat and FWPM
- Providing ECoW services
- Other duties for attaining Trust objectives as required
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Educated to graduate level or higher in a relevant subject
- Experience managing ecological projects
- Knowledge of environmental legislation and licensing requirements
- Experience of undertaking a wide range of ecological surveys
- Full driving licence
- IEEM / CIEEM membership
- GIS experience
- CSCS card holder

You must be prepared to work outdoors, outside regular office hours or away from your home office when reasonably required.
Salary & Benefits
Offering £27,000 – £30,000 (dependent on experience). As well as our generous benefits package, we are committed to assisting the professional and personal development of our team.
