Resilient Rivers Photography Exhibition

During the early stages of lockdown, when people were only able to go outside once a day, we ran an online photography exhibition to encourage people to spend that precious outdoors time by their local river or burn. The theme was Resilient Rivers – we wanted people to get out there with their cameras or phones and capture not only the beauty of our waterways and the wildlife and human activities they support, but also to show how resilient our rivers must be to withstand the negative impacts that human behaviour has on them, both in the past and in the modern age. We received loads of wonderful submissions, and it was a wide range showing both the good and bad aspects of our waterways. We had photos of herons, swans, goosander, and mallards with their ducklings. Some entries were of the weirs that act as barriers on many of our rivers, and some show trout and salmon attempting to pass these barriers. We had many lovely landscape shots of flowing water and wooded glens, but also some highlighting litter and discarded objects clogging the water. Some submissions show how people get out and enjoy the river in their own way. Overall, it was a great response and a nice mix of the good and the bad aspects of our waterways.
