Restoration of Shelforkie Moss

Sandra and Alison were out today to meet up with Daniel and Corrie of DC Diggers to discuss the final pieces of work for the restoration of Shelforkie Moss. 

The moss is an active raised bog. The site is approx 100 hectares and it has a number of protected designations on and adjacent to it.  It was ditched in the mid 20th century, with two large and deep ditches transecting it which converged and then discharged into the Allan Water.  The work will support the reviving of the bog-moss Sphagnum magellanicum as well as  Sphagnum cuspidatum pools which occur scattered across the bog. 

The peat dams are complete with the plastic piling dams and woody debris being completed this week. The work will restore the capacity of the bog to hold water, slow run off into the river, improving water quality and at the same time support extensive new biodiversity.

The project is funded by NatureScot and ScotGov Rural and is a collaboration between the Trust and Blackford Farms.
