RiverLife: Almond & Avon – Midcalder Weir Fish pass, part of the largest fish pass project in Scotland starts

As this ambitious project comes to an end this year, we are delighted that one of the final actions will be to deliver better fish passage at Mid Calder Weir on the River Almond.

West Lothian Council have instructed Barhale to installed a new technical fish pass on the weir. This will be a two flight larinier pass. The Trust would have liked to have seen a more natural solution which would have had more wide ranging benefits to the river, however are pleased that another fish pass solution is being delivered in this the largest fish passage project in Scotland. The work at Mid Calder Weir will ‘unlock‘ the river as four weirs upstream have already been eased as part of the project.

Two weirs remain to be completed – Dowies Weir to be delivered by City of Edinburgh Council at Cramond and Seafield upstream of Kirkton.

The project is funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund and Scottish Government.
