Killandean Greenway is a greenspace in Livingston, situated alongside the Killandean Burn. Over the past couple of months there have been several volunteer days here to help improve the access and general appearance of the area. Volunteers have helped to remove old burnt out benches, clear back vegetation from paths and generally tidy the place up. During three volunteer days we managed to repair and upgrade four sets of steps which has improved access into the site. These steps were all in a state of disrepair, some timbers were completely rotten and in one location two extra steps were found buried under all the mud that had washed onto the steps over the years. Volunteers helped to dig out old steps, replacing these with new timber and surfacing – a tough but rewarding job!
As well as the practical conservation days held at Killandean, we also organised a brash bank training day for volunteers to learn the skills and techniques involved in installing brash bank protection. A staff member from the Wild Trout Trust came up to deliver the training and we worked together to repair a section of bank in the Killandean Greenway which was beginning to undercut the path. The day involved collecting brash from around the site and working in-stream to create the new banking, using wooden stakes and lots and lots of brash! We had several volunteers out helping to repair the bank and learning the skills to help us with other brash bank protection activities elsewhere in the project.
