Catchment Description
The River Forth is one of Scotland’s major rivers, the river basin covers much of Stirlingshire in Scotland’s Central Belt. The Gaelic name is Abhainn Dubh, meaning “black river”, in the upper reach above Stirling. The River Forth starts high up on the side of Ben Lomond and winds its way down through the landscape and across the flat lands of the carse of Stirling.Â
Historic influences
The Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in 1297 between the forces of William Wallace and Andrew Moray, and the English army during the First War of Scottish Independence. On the banks of the River Forth you also have Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument.Â
