Catchment Description

The River Leven is a river in Fife that flows from Loch Leven into the Firth of Forth at the town of Leven. The river is home to brown trout and hosts a run of sea trout and Atlantic salmon. The estuary also has bass and mullet.

Historic influences

This river has been highly modified to fit the growing industries of coal mining, paper mills and jute mills during the later stages of the 19th century. There are a number of barriers on this river including sluice gates, weirs and dams. Loch Leven was altered to increase its water levels so that the mills along the river would have sufficient water to power industry.
