Volunteer activities have started at Killandean Greenway with volunteers helping out the RiverLife team with some fairly strenuous jobs!
The site has a number of picnic tables and benches made from railway sleepers. Unfortunately some of these were rotten and had seen better days or had been set on fire at some point, leaving partial remains in the ground. Over the two days, volunteers helped to dig out all the old sleepers and move them to a location that they could be uplifted by West Lothian Council. It was a tough job moving these very heavy sleepers across some pretty soggy ground then up a short but steep grassy hill. Where possible any sleepers that were still in good condition were used to replace missing sleepers elsewhere in the site. Volunteers managed to cut the sleepers to the required size and moved them from one end of the site to the other – an amazing effort by all involved!
As well as removing the benches, vegetation was also cut back and paths were cleared. In some places the vegetation was covering more than half of the path making it difficult for walkers and cyclists to use them. The paths that the volunteers cleared are now free from over-hanging vegetation and of any moss/mud that has built up over time providing much better access for people using the path network.
