World Fish Migration Day – Howden Rock Ramp

On the main stem of a river large scale interventions are required to ensure fish passage is provided for all fish species. If removal is not possible (due to infrastructure or other reasons) then a rock ramp which mimics the bed of the river provides a sustainable solution.

As part of the RiverLife project, the Trust worked with West Lothian Council to install the largest rock ramp in the UK on the River Almond just outside Livingston to allow fish over Howden Weir. The ramp provided not only a fish pass solution but also a large biodiverse area in which sediment can form and insects and other species live. Restoring the ecosystem of the river.

Unlike other more technical solutions this is a holistic approach to restore more of a rivers wellbeing and ensure there is less burden on future maintenance.

Let the fish find the way. #WorldFishMigrationDay
