Communities who live along rivers have access to a natural heritage that is both beautiful and powerful. Rivers existed before humans and they have changed and adapted to lots of different pressures over millions of years. However, in the time we have roamed the earth, humans have historically damaged and altered this natural resource, which has left its mark.

But all of that is changing; river health has improved in recent years, in part due to communities rallying around in support and stewardship of these local assets. This kind of engagement is vital in maintaining the health of this heritage and we hope to see it continue. There are lots of ways for people to engage with, and look after, their river from litter picks to citizen science monitoring, projects in schools and learning at events to name a few! Any positive influence on our rivers can only help these lifelines to thrive and support our communities for as long as possible, so join us in celebrating world rivers day by getting to know your local river!
