Callander's Landscape

Overview

Callander’s Landscape is an exciting project that focuses on the dramatic landscapes that surround Callander, improving natural and cultural heritage and ensuring that more people can access this awe-inspiring place.

Thanks to National Lottery players, the project was awarded £1.43million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help transform the Callander area over the next three years. Partners, volunteers and other grant funders are all contributing to this landscape-scale project, which has overall value of around £2.2 million.

The three year project is made up of more than 19 projects in and around the town and will see 15 partners all working together to develop the vision and road map for delivering this ambitious set of projects.

The ambitious project will help transform Callander into the ‘Outdoor Capital of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park’, with a more accessible and conserved landscape ready for visitors and locals to enjoy and explore.

The Forth Rivers Trust is lead partner on the River’s Restore projects within the partnership which are outlined below.

Objectives

The project has 4 main objectives

  •  Restore – To restore habitats from rivers to woodlands, wet hay meadows to other landscape features within the CLP area. 
  •  Research –  Research Callanders rich built and natural heritage and connect communities to it. 
  • Explore – Create links and connections to heritage within the landscape. 
  • Engage – Engage people with heritage within Callander’s Landscape through activities and interpretation. 

Funders

Callander’s Landscape is primarily funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with a range of other funders providing match funding. The Forth District Salmon Fishery Board is supporting parts of Rivers Restore within Callander’s Landscape.

Wild Salmon Walk – Leny Falls pdf

Forth Rivers Centre

The Forth Rivers Centre is an exciting new space developed by the Forth Rivers Trust as an outdoor learning classroom where invited groups can learn about rivers. 

Leny Burn Riparian Improvement Project

A project to improve the riparian habitat of the Leny burn by working with the landowner to fence and conservation graze the river corridor. 

Garbh Uisge Bank Protection Project

Using green bank protection to improve the river bank along the Garbh Uisge. This work will protect wet meadow, reduce the erosion risk to a national cycle way and provide cover for wildlife.

Rivers Training

A range of workshops have been developed to engage volunteers in supporting their local rivers. Redd surveying, fish scale reading, INNS and more. 

Rivers Engage

A range of engagement activites linking to local rivers within callander have been developed which include intro to angling and Fish in the Classroom.
